Follow the spiral around the top of the head to add 8-10 hair pieces. Use a small slicker brush to brush out the yarn tails to make it fuzzy. Then snip the hair to shape and shorten the fuzz on top.

You can see a quick video on how to brush and trim the hairdo you visit 3rd House from the End on Facebook HERE.

Spring Cleaning Dishcloth Crochet Pattern

And we’re back with Day 2 of the Spring Cleaning Crochet Patterns! Yesterday I released the Spring Cleaning Bulky Dish Scrubbie pattern. Today I’m excited to introduce to you my version of the reusable dishcloth.

It’s made using a stitch called The Lemon Peel stitch. It’s a pattern that uses Single Crochet and Double Crochet and is very quick to make.

The Lemon Peel stitch creates a uniform texture that prevents the cloth from stretching out too much. One of my pet peeves is using a scrubbie or dish cloth that gets wadded up in my hand just to prevent my fingers from slipping through holes in stretched out materials.

This dishcloth is finished off with the Reverse Single Crochet stitch. It’s a fun way to bind off projects and it creates a uniquely recognizable border. If you’re having trouble with the stitch, you can find a great tutorial video with Heart Hook Home.

These sturdy dishcloths are great for cleaning for those screens, outdoor furniture and for dusting away cobwebs. They’re also great for washing down windows.

Let’s get crafty!

Spring Cleaning Bulky Dish Scrubbie Crochet Pattern

Since Spring cleaning is happening everywhere as the snow melts and people here in Arizona are heading to the pool, I upgraded my kitchen with some much-needed heavy-duty bulky kitchen scrubbies.

Quite frankly, they’re addicting to make. I whipped up 6 of them in a couple of evenings this week and I can’t wait to gift away more!

These bulky dish scrubbies are the perfect size for every hand and don’t stretch out like other scrubbies do. They’re made with a Half Double Crochet stitch and work up pretty quickly.

The only fiddly bit is learning how to work with Red Heart Scrubby yarn. It takes some practice, and you can always go up a hook size if that makes the project easier.

Ready? Let’s get crafty!

For the nostrils, use scraps of black yarn to make 2 x-shaped stitches over Round 6 with 5 stitches between them. They should line up with the eyes.

Optional: Use black yarn to make 2 short stitches to the sides of the eyes to create eyelashes. You can also use a little bit of pink yarn to make two short stitches below the eyes to make little cheeks.

Ears (make 2)

Inside of ear (make 2)

Start with Caron Simply Soft yarn in Watermelon

FO leaving a tail about 8 inches long.

Pinch the ears together at the bottom and use part of the tail to sew the pinched part closed at the base. Attach the ears to the head between rounds 21-23.

Horn

Start with Caron Simply Soft yarn in Sunshine

Round 1: Magic Circle 4

Rounds 2-3: (2 rounds) Sc in each sc around (4)

Round 8: (Inc, sc 2) repeat around (8), sl st last stitch.

Finish Off, leave a tail about 6 inches long for sewing the Horn to the Head. Center the Horn between the Ears and Eyes and sew it in place.

Assembly

I highly recommend using straight pins to get the arms/front legs and back legs into place before you sew them on permanently. Sew the arms/front legs and back legs towards the front of the body to help your pony sit up unassisted.

The back legs should be level with the bottom of the body and the front legs should be positioned between them, the tops meeting the shoulders at a slight angle.

Use a table or a large book to help you gauge where all the parts should go, a flat base is important.

Using the extra long tail of yarn you made, attach the head to the top of the body. Pass the tail through the bottom of the head, right where the neck should join the head.

Using short stitches, sew back and forth from the head to the body to create the neck. The head should wobble only very slightly.

Make sure your stitches are small and tight to prevent too much wobble. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Tail

Using Caron Simply Soft in Watermelon, Harvest Red, Super Duper Yellow, Limelight, Blue Mint, Grape and Red Heart Soft in Tangerine.

Chain 21, leave a long tail on each end for sewing. Knot the end of the chain. Tie all 7 colors together in a simple knot, sew knot to base of unicorn body.

Mane

Using Caron Simply Soft in Watermelon, Harvest Red, Super Duper Yellow, Limelight, Blue Mint, Grape and Red Heart Soft in Tangerine.

Chain 11, leave a long tail on each end for sewing. Knot the end of the chain.

Forelock

Using Caron Simply Soft in Watermelon, Harvest Red, Super Duper Yellow, Limelight, Blue Mint, Grape and Red Heart Soft in Tangerine.

Chain 11, leave a long tail on each end for sewing. Knot the end of the chain.

Attaching the mane/forelock

Taking your Forelock colors, sew them just behind the Horn and pull them forward to fill out the entire mane.

To sew on the Mane, start at the base of the Forelock and sew the Mane chains next to each other in pairs down the middle of the head. You should finish up right at the base of the head.

Once your Unicorn is complete you can make anyone’s day magical! Be sure to share the unique colors in your unicorn.

Have an awesome day!

Badger the Buckskin Pony Crochet Pattern

A couple of weeks ago the Husbeast surprised me with a very special gift: Horseback riding!

I don’t think I’ve ever really grown out of the “crazy horse girl” phase. She’s just deep down inside, rocking in the corner and whispering about ponies.

Our trail guide’s horse’s name was Badger, and he was a small but sturdy little Buckskin horse that was happy to lead the way across the mountains of Sedona.

I wanted a little reminder of the trip, something better than saddle-sores. So I designed this adorable little Buckskin pony, Badger!

A little horsey knowledge for you: Buckskin is what a horse is called when it has a pale coat, a dark mane and tail, and dark socks on its legs. It’s the horse that Lorne Green rode in Bonanza. (Does it make me old that I knew that off-hand?)

Let’s get crafty!

Add 12mm safety eyes between Rounds 13 and 14 with 7 stitches in between the eyes. You can see from the photos that when the eyes are pushed all the way in there are 7 stitches in between both eyes.

Optional: Use scraps of black yarn to make 2 short stitches to the sides of the eyes to create eyelashes.

For the nostrils, use scraps of black yarn to make 2 x-shaped stitches over Round 6 with 5 stitches between them. They should line up with the eyes.

Round 23: (Sc, dec) repeat around (12)

Round 24: Dec (6) Finish Off, leaving a tail about 12 inches long to sew the head to the body.

Now comes more shaping of the face. Using about 6-8 inches of Caron Simply Soft in Autumn Maize, pass yarn between both eyes and pull slightly to indent the eyes and shape the face. Don’t pull too much or you’ll wind up with a goofy-looking pony! Just enough to indent the eyes a bit and give it more shape. Finish off and weave in ends.

Ears (make 2)

Using Caron Simply Soft yarn in Autumn Maize

Front and back of ears (make 4)

Round 1: Magic ring (6)

Round 2: Inc in each Sc around (12)

Round 3: (Sc, inc) repeat around (18) Sl st in last stitch, Finish Off, leaving a short tail

Now you will crochet both sides of the ears together. Using Caron Simply Soft in Charcoal Heather, put the “wrong sides” of the ears together with the tails of the yarn in between them.

Insert your hook under the Sl st and pull the Charcoal Heather through, Ch 1 and Sc in the same Sc.

Sc around (18) and sl st the last stitch. When you’re part of the way around, twist the ends of the ears together and tuck them between the front and back of the ears.

They won’t unravel or get in the way inside the ears. Leave a tail about 6-8 inches long to sew the ears shut.

Pinch the ears together at the bottom and use part of the tail to sew it pinched closed at the base. It will resemble an empty ice cream cone.

Attach the ears to the head between Rounds 21-23 with the remaining tail. Finish Off and weave in all ends.

Tail

Using Caron Simply Soft yarn in Charcoal Heather

Measure out 12 strands of yarn, about 8 inches long each.

Using 2 strands at a time, find the center of the back of the body just above the base, right about where the tail should be, insert your hook and pull through 2 strands part way, about an inch.

This creates a loop. Tuck the ends of the strands into the loop and pull, making the yarn tight.

Repeat this 5 times until you have a tail section 2 columns wide and 3 rows high.

Mane and Forelock

Using Caron Simply Soft yarn in Charcoal Heather

Measure out 54-60 strands of yarn, about 8 inches long. Again, using 2 strands in each space, repeat the latch method to make the Forelock.

Starting from in between the ears, make the Forelock section 3 columns wide and 2 rows long. Continue down past the Ears to make the Mane, keeping the columns as centered as possible.

Once all of the hair has been attached, lay the pony on its side and trim the hair to the desired length. I trimmed the Mane and Forelock to be about 2-3 inches long and left the Tail to be naturally long. You can always add more or less hair and trim it however you like.

Whew, all done!

It takes a bit of effort to get all that hair on there, but it’s totally worth it! All that loose hair is perfect for braiding and weaving flowers and ribbons into it.

What’s more, you can customize the colors of your pony to whatever you want. Be sure to share what your pony looks like and inspire others!

Have an awesome day!

Cactus Teething Toy Crochet Pattern

Have you ever had a great idea and it totally falls through? Yeah, that totally happened this week.

I had planned for a different cactus pattern (since I’m “stuck” on them) but it didn’t quite turn out. So, luckily for you, I have a different cactus pattern that whips up fast.

It’s perfect for those last-minute baby shower invites, or for a visit to a friend with a teething toddler. Especially when that blanket you’re making for them STILL isn’t finished. (Yeah, I see you!)

I really like this teething toy pattern because it fits into little mouths and has hand holds for all size teethers. Just wet it through and pop it in the freezer for an easily reusable teething toy.

Let’s get crafty!

Cactus (make 2)

Row 1: Ch 19, Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next 16 ch, Sc 4 in last ch. Turn and continue working across the opposite side of your beginning chain. Sc in next 17 ch, ch 1 and turn. (22)

Sc in next 4 Sc, Inc in next 4 Sc, Sc in next 8 Sc. Ch 9, HDC in 3rd ch from hook, HDC in next 2 ch, make 3 HDC in outside loop of the next ch, HDC in next 3 ch. Moving to the body of the cactus, Sc in the next Sc. Sc in remaining 8 Sc. Ch 1, turn. (58)

When you complete Panel 1, Finish Off and set aside. When you complete Panel 2, pull up a loop. Do not cut the yarn!

Layer the Panels together with Panel 2 on top and the tops of the cactus facing you. Ch 1. Push your hook through both panels and Sc in the same Sc.

Sc across the bottom of the cactus, ch 1 and Sc in the corner to give it a sharp edge and continue Sc along the side of the cactus. Sc in the next 11 Sc.

Sc3tog in the inside bend of the cactus arm. Sc in next 2 outside loops. Make 4 Sc in the HDC space at the top of the arm. Sc in next 4 Sc, make 3 Sc in the outside corner, Sc in next 3 Sc.

Sc in the next 8 Sc in the body of the cactus. Sl st to beginning Sc and Finish Off, weaving in all ends.

The cactus may be a little twisty and refuse to lay flat. That’s okay! You can spray it with a bit of water and stretch it out on a blocking board. Or, you can put it under something flat and heavy, like a wide water bottle or a book or whatever is handy that you don’t mind getting damp.

Make a little group of these awesome teething toys and present them with pride at your next baby shower. They also work great as garland pieces. What else can you do with these little flat cacti? Be sure to let me know and hashtag your ideas #3rdHouseCreations to share with everyone!

Have an awesome day!

Cheeks (make 2)

Using Caron Simply Soft yarn in Strawberry

Round 1: Make a Magic Circle with 6 Sc (6)

Sl st to 1st Sc to join the Circle. Leave a tail about 8 inches long to sew the cheeks to the face.

Embroidering the Sleepy Eyes

Using your straight pins, make the Sleepy Eyes design between Rounds 4 and 8 on both sides of the pillow.

The curve of the eyes is shallow, only about a half inch deep.

The eyelashes are also short, about 3/8th of an inch long.

You can see in the photo the eye on the left is far too deep and the stitches are long, making it look messy. Do your best to make short stitches and make the eyelashes angle towards the center of the cushion to make the Sleepy Eyes.

Optional Gold Trim:

Using “I Love This Yarn” in Gold

Find your (Sl st and ch 1) seam that goes across the middle of the cushion exactly between your two middle BLO rows. Insert your hook into the middle row underneath the HDC there and pull the yarn through.

Ch 1, then Sc in the same Sc and continue to Sc around the cushion. You will continue to insert your hook underneath the HDC and Sc on top of it, working perpendicular across the HDC round.

Sl st into the first Sc and Finish Off, weaving in all ends.

Now you have an adorable and trendy little cushion for your chair, your bed, or your couch. It’s also a great little gift for a nursery or a college dorm. Get creative with your gifting!

Have an awesome day!

Layer the panels together with Panel 2 on the bottom. Chain 1 and push your hook through both panels to Sc the panels together. Crochet around the entire outside of the cloud. Stop about 5 inches away from the starting point and stuff the cloud firmly. Continue Sc around, Sl st into the starting Sc.

Finish Off and weave in all ends.

Optional: Create a cloud rainbow mobile

Make 5 Mini Hearts in whatever color you like. You can find the pattern here. I used Caron Simply Soft in Watermelon, Sunshine, Strawberry, Lime and Grape.

Measure out 5 lengths of white yarn, about 18 inches long. Attach the yarn to the top of each of your hearts. On a table or large flat surface, arrange your hearts where you want them to be when the cloud is hung up.

Using your tapestry needle, stitch the lengths of yarn to the bottom of the cloud. Weave in all ends. Ta-Da! You have an awesome cloud wall hanging to decorate a nursery.

Get crafty and have an awesome day!

Mini Heart Crochet Pattern

(My apologies for the late post, the Happy Raptor is battling a really nasty cold and reactions to her antibiotic. We’re gonna have a snuggle party til she feels better.)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week! Let’s jump right in to the pattern for today.

It’s a straightforward one that’s great for beginners. You can whip up this adorable little heart in less than an hour for that special someone or to decorate just about anything!

I loved them so much I added them to the wreath on my door. How cute is that?!

Heart

Row 1: Ch 9, Sc in 2nd ch from hook, Sc in remaining 7 ch. Ch 1 and turn (8)

Rows 2-3: Sc in each sc, ch 1 and turn (8)

Row 4: Sc in next 4 Sc. Ch 1 and turn (4)

Rows 5-7: Sc in each sc (4) Continue Sc around outside of the entire heart. When you get to the bottom point of the heart make a (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the same bottom Sc. When you reach the valley of the top of the heart, make a Sl st in the lowest part. Continue crocheting around the heart and Sl st in the beginning Sc.

Your first panel is complete! Finish Off and weave in ends. Make a second panel and Do Not Finish Off! Line up both of your panels with Panel 2 on the bottom. Chain 1 and push your hook through both panels. Crochet around both panels.

When you get to bottom point of the Heart make a (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the Ch 2 space that you made when you Sc around the outside of the panels the first time. Stop about 1 inch from your starting point and stuff the heart.

When you reach the center valley on the top of the heart, Sl st into the previous Sl st space to keep the definition of the heart. Continue crocheting around and Sl st into the starting Sc. Finish Off and weave in all ends.

Optional: Give your little heart some character by stitching two little eyes and a mouth across the front.

These adorable little hearts are also great as keychains. Instead of weaving in your last end, use it to stitch tightly around a jump ring. Then simply attach your heart to a keychain. Easy peasy!

Get crafty and have an awesome day!

Robot “Love Machine” Crochet Pattern

Robot “Love Machine” Crochet Pattern

This week has been wracked with nasty colds, deep coughs and an ear infection. The Happy Raptor found an old and very un-child-safe robot, so between naps and soups and medicines, I made her a little something to cheer her up.

This adorable little “Love Machine” can be snuggled by kids of all ages, and the little pop of color can be customized for any giftee.

It’s such a cute little Valentine’s Day gift, perfect for guys and gals. Anyone can make hearts for Valentine’s Day. Let’s think outside the box and get crafty!
